Two Types of Crown Lengthening
Our doctor may recommend crown lengthening when patients have too much gum tissue, resulting in gummy smiles, or for more functional reasons. There are two types of crown lengthening.
Esthetic Crown Lengthening
When patients want to eliminated their gummy smiles, esthetic crown lengthening exposes more of the tooth structure, allowing the smile to look fuller and wider. It is a simple procedure that takes about an hour. Your doctor will numb the area to be treated. Small incisions are made to separate the gum tissue from the teeth. These excess pieces of gum are removed as the gums are reshaped along with any excessive bone. Stitches may be placed, as well as a healing bandage that will promote reattachment of the gums to the teeth. Crown lengthening can be performed on just one tooth, but is generally used to enhance a broader smile.
This procedure can be done to improve the look of gummy smiles, but can also be utilized to improve the health of the smile by removing an excess amount of gum tissue that can harbor bacteria and promote disease.
Functional Crown Lengthening
This procedure is very similar to esthetic crown lengthening. However, functional crown lengthening is used to reshape the gums and bone on a tooth needing a restoration, such as a dental bridge or crown. If there is too much decay, not enough tooth structure, or the tooth is broken below the gum line, your doctor will need to expose more tooth structure and prepare it to receive a functional restoration. This is generally at least a three tooth procedure.
